Santorini is part of Greece, a full member of the Schengen Area. Citizens of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and most Western nations may enter visa-free for stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Your passport must have a minimum of six months' validity beyond your intended departure date. Since Brexit, UK citizens adhere to the standard Schengen 90-day limit. If you plan an extended stay, consult the nearest Greek consulate at least eight weeks prior to travel.
By Air: Santorini International Airport (JTR) receives direct flights from most major European hubs during peak season. From North America, connections are made through Athens International Airport (ATH) — Olympic Air and Aegean Airlines operate multiple daily flights, approximately 45 minutes. Book at least three months in advance for May through September travel.
By Ferry: High-speed catamarans from Athens (Piraeus) reach Santorini in approximately five hours; conventional ferries take seven to nine hours but offer the extraordinary experience of watching the caldera emerge from the sea. Book through Ferryscanner or directly with Blue Star Ferries and SeaJets. The Athinios port sits below the cliff face — taxis, buses, and hotel transfers meet arrivals at the dock.
KTEL Public Bus: Reliable and affordable at €1.80–2.50 per journey. The main terminal is in Fira, connecting to Oia, Perissa, Perivolos, Kamari, Akrotiri, and the airport. Frequent during the day, sparse after 10pm. During peak season, the Oia bus becomes overcrowded — arrive early.
Taxi: Limited fleet, severely strained in peak season. Pre-book for airport transfers and dinner reservations. Expect €15–25 for most island journeys.
ATV and Quad Bike Rental: The most popular mode of independent transport, €20–35/day. Exercise significant caution — the roads are narrow, winding, and heavily trafficked in summer. The most common cause of tourist injury on the island.
Cable Car: From the Fira port to the main village. €6 each way, queues up to 45 minutes in peak season. The 587-step alternative is steep but rewarding. Donkey rides are traditionally available but animal welfare concerns lead most visitors to choose the cable car.
Car Rental: Most comfortable for families or those visiting less-trafficked areas. Parking in Oia and Fira is extremely limited — plan accordingly and book in advance through major international agencies.
